Most people arrive at the piano convinced that playing is something the fingers do. It is an understandable picture: the fingers are the part you can see moving, and they are certainly the part that meets the keys. But watch a pianist from the side rather than from above and a different picture appears. The back supports, the shoulder hangs freely, the upper arm carries the hand along the keyboard, the forearm rotates, the wrist absorbs and redirects — and only then do the fingers finish the job. They are the last few centimetres of a chain that begins at your back. Understanding that chain is not anatomy for its own sake. It changes your sound, and it is the best protection there is against the aches that send far too many pianists to a physiotherapist.

The fingers are the end of the chain, not the beginning

A finger on its own is a small, weak lever with no muscle of its own worth speaking of — the muscles that move it sit in your forearm. So when a student tries to produce a big, warm sound by working the fingers harder, they are asking the smallest part of the system to do the largest job. The result is predictable: a hard, thin tone, a tired forearm, and a sound that stops carrying past the third row. The whole arm has mass, and mass is what a piano string responds to. In lessons I often ask a student to play a single deep chord twice: once by pressing with the fingers, once by letting the arm fall and simply arriving on the keys. Nobody has ever needed the difference explained to them.

Sound comes from speed and weight, not from pressing harder

It helps enormously to know what actually happens inside the instrument. The key launches a hammer, the hammer flies free, and the only thing that decides how loud the note is is how fast that hammer is travelling when it hits the string. Once the hammer is airborne, nothing you do at the key can change the note — pressing harder afterwards achieves precisely nothing except tension. So the question is never "how much force?" but "how fast, and from what height?" A relaxed arm dropping from a little above the keys gives a full, round sound with almost no effort. A stiff arm pushing into the keybed gives a loud, brittle one and a sore wrist. Loud is a matter of speed; harsh is a matter of stiffness. They are not the same thing, and confusing them is behind most ugly fortissimos.

The wrist: a hinge, a spring and a place to breathe

Between the weight of the arm and the precision of the fingers sits the wrist, and it has to do two contradictory jobs at once: transmit and cushion. A locked wrist transmits everything, including shock, straight into the small tendons of the hand — this is where most piano-related pain starts. A collapsed wrist transmits nothing and leaves the fingers working alone. What you want is a wrist that is level, quietly alive, and free to move in every direction. Practically, I teach it as breathing: let the wrist rise gently at the end of a phrase, the way you would lift your hand off a table, and let it settle again as the next phrase begins. That small vertical motion releases accumulated tension every few bars, and it happens to look and sound exactly like musical phrasing — which is not a coincidence.

Three things to try this week

First, the drop: hold your arm above the keyboard, let it fall entirely of its own weight onto a single note with a firm but not rigid finger, and listen. Do it ten times, changing nothing but the height, and you have a complete dynamic range without a gram of force. Second, forearm rotation: play a simple alternating figure — thumb, fifth finger, thumb — and let the forearm rock gently like a doorknob turning rather than lifting each finger independently. Tremolos, Alberti basses and broken octaves all become easy this way, and impossible without it. Third, the horizontal journey: in a scale or arpeggio, let the upper arm lead the hand along the keyboard slightly ahead of the fingers, so the hand is always arriving rather than stretching. Stretching is what strains; travelling never does.

None of this needs to be thought about while you perform — the point of understanding your mechanism is to stop having to think about it. But when something hurts, sounds harsh, or refuses to get faster, the answer is almost always somewhere further back along the chain than the finger you were blaming. Play from the back, through a free shoulder and a living wrist, and let the fingers do only what they are good at: aiming. That is the whole secret, and it is a physical one long before it is a musical one.
